If White protects on the left side, then Black would like to play at 3, but the White has a good play at 4. So Black will play less strongly on the bottom side.

I have no idea if this is two points better, or even necessarily better, but it is settled. There are also quite fun complicated punishments if players start deviating from the joseki. Hmmmm....

One of the things that was making me consider changing gresil's move was the possibility that if a complicated fight incurred, far more points could be lost on move corrections than the subtle differences in joseki choice

I changed my mind because undermining my teammate like this is no way to play. Picking a simpler line because there is less room for 2+ point mistakes defeats the purpose of BB, which is to learn from the stronger members of the team, not to win. It's not joseki, but it doesn't feel like it can be that bad either, so let's see how it develops

My first thought when black played this move was, "Well, at least it's not at a..."

My second thought was wondering just exactly what black was trying to do here...

It reeks of kyu, to me.

It's as if black is scared of the variations, so he plays as though he's under attack and doesn't want to die.

Black 1 doesn't help you attack the corner, it doesn't really help you attack the side. It's one of those chutou "pushing the head out" moves, and the kind I really hate, because it doesn't really accomplish anything.

After white plays 2, white has a position on both sides.

I can't think of what black's followup ideas were...

And if you don't play in the area, let's say you play 1, White takes his corner nice and cleanly with 2, and then approaches the corner with 4, taking away black's nice shimari and leaving his floating group to chill. This result looks bad to me.

How did topazg approve this? Now I have to take some time and determine whether or not changing this move is worth upping the komi to 10.5...

Maybe I'm missing something here, and Gresil has a followup... stupid hide tabs. I'd like to be able to read my partners minds right now, because this series of events is beyond my prediction.

I'll post my decision later.

Argh... this is painful. Looking over my diagrams, I think black still has play, but I would've definitely changed the move for the low low price of 2 points. 4 points... errrgh... that's kinda hefty.

But even if I change this move, there's a good chance Gresil won't know the correct follow up to it. I guess we'll have to see what he's got in mind.

I'd love to push and attack that weak group some more, but my single white stone there is going to be attacked if I do. So let's reinforce it, take some territory, and improve our position to attack again later if we get a chance. One flaw I've noticed is that I like attacking a bit too much. I tend to keep attacking until I've spread myself too thing, then, just like in Risk, my mass of 'conquered territory' just gets rolled over by the built-up opponents. So let's not do that. Let's dig our trenches here so we can fight later without losing the bonus for conquering South America. Actually, let's drop the other board game metaphor, and just play a defensive move.

These are the options for moves that will grab a base in the west. I'm going to go ahead and say no to 'c', because it has an open 'skirt', giving the black team a free third-line approach. A is more cautious, but I feel like it might let my stones end up over-condensed and inefficient. There are a few reasons I'm going to go with 'b'. First, I think I can defend against an invasion if black jumps into my shape.

I kind of doubt that 6+ would actually be played right away, I'm just showing that there is an answer to them. If black pressures our group more from the center, we may have to block off an attack from that side, but this should be defended well enough for the meantime.

Since it SHOULD be defended well enough to play, I'll show why I want to stretch that far. Apart from being a bit less dense, it has a followup above, if we get a chance at it.

This looks great. It gives us a perfect extension to their corner, then makes them defend it. That leaves sente for a play on the bottom, right, or a move at one of the 'a' points. Lots of great places we'd love to have sente for.

If they take our extension with a, we can put a little pressure on their bottom group to stabilize our western group better. If they grab eyespace with a slide to b, we will probably have to defend the side group, being forced into greater stability. If the black team attacks our bottom group, we will take much, if not all, of the southwest corner, then look to split their groups if possible. And if black takes a move on top, it will be in gote, so we can grab a big point on the east, south, or attack a weak group.

Prediction: W10 will be the first changed move.

When giving a teaching game, you can't point out every mistake the weaker player made, or you'd be there all day. It must be difficult being a big brother. :-)

Another move that is almost good enough. I'm sure that I can find something better, like a 2-space extension, but is it 2+ points better?

I wish he would just make a really bad move. Then my job would be much easier.

I have been wondering if the price of correction is too small. As an observer, I think it would be more fun to see more corrections. What would be neat would be to see the same play get corrected twice.
